Product designer average salary

Product design is the second highest-paid job in the design industry and has grown quite popular among the younger generation.

Great user experience in digital products is more important than ever. As a result, product designers and UX designers are in high demand. Since the demand for product designers is increasing, many businesses offer a rewarding salary for this position. We can take Glassdoor’s statistics as an example to determine the standard income for product designers that work for a US-based company  — approximately $95,183 (including additional cash compensation such as bonuses, commissions, tips, shared profits, etc.).

When calculating the average salary of product designers, we need to consider several important factors. In general, these are the factors that websites such as Payscale, Levels, and Glassdoor use to calculate product designers' median annual paycheck:

  • Experience: This is perhaps the most commonly used factor for determining the average product designer’s salary. The product designer job positions are often divided depending on years of experience: Junior (1–3 years of experience), Mid-level (3–5 years of experience), and Senior (5–7 years of experience).
  • Location: The location of the hiring company is also relevant, as companies located in larger cities in highly developed countries (such as San Francisco or New York) generally offer higher paychecks, especially if they expect people to work onsite.
  • Employing company: Usually, tech and design companies offer higher salaries to UX designers than businesses outside of these sectors. According to Payscale, Vmware, Inc. offers the highest salaries (the average total compensation is about $144,786).

According to Glassdoor, this is the average total compensation of junior, mid-level, and senior product designers that work for US businesses:

As you can see, there’s a considerable difference between entry-level and senior-level designers’ average salaries.

Product design salaries by location

Product designer salaries based on location

As we already mentioned, another helpful way to calculate the average product designer salary is by their employer’s location.

Do note that, depending on the sample size of employees, the data may vary. However, it should be sufficient to give you a general idea about the market.

Here’s the data on product designer salaries provided by Payscale and Glassdoor:

Product design salaries at large tech companies and startups

When determining the average salary of product designers, we need to consider that there’s a stark contrast between the standard salaries offered by startups and large tech companies.

For example, large multinational tech companies, such as Google and Facebook, generally offer significantly higher salaries than smaller businesses and startups. Moreover, product designers who work for these companies can expect a huge rise in their paychecks as they get promoted.

This is the average product designer salary (including bonuses) at Google and Meta (Facebook):

Google:

  • Junior product designer: $171,786
  • Mid-level product designer: $244,692

The impact of remote work

When speaking about product design job opportunities, there’s another important aspect that we need to consider. Nowadays, a large number of companies offer the possibility of a part-time or full-time remote position for product designers. Check out some of the best product design companies, some of which offer remote positions.

Remote work is here to stay, making it much easier for product designers worldwide to find a job in the design field, regardless of where they live. That means that product designers who live in less developed countries have the opportunity to make as much as their peers who reside in countries with high living standards.

These are some other benefits of working remotely:

  • Flexible working hours
  • Less to no time spent commuting
  • More time for rest between work tasks
  • No additional expenses or minimal costs on lunch or transportation

On average, remote product designers make approximately $144,985, including additional cash compensation in the form of bonuses, profit sharing, tips, commissions, etc.

Nowadays, freelance work is another popular option amongst product designers. By choosing to work freelance, product designers have more flexibility in client selection and how much they’ll charge for each project.

Freelance product designers make approximately $73,926, including average additional cash compensation in the form of bonuses, profits, commissions, profit sharing, etc.
